TransPark Hires Transportation Director
(Kinston)— The North Carolina Global TransPark has hired a former senior U.S. Navy officer to oversee transportation at the complex just north of Kinston.
Randy Robb was hired as the park's transportation director after a three to four month search. He will be responsible for directing, managing, supervising and coordinating the activities and services of all aspects of transportation requirements for the GTP Authority, including highways, rail, and aviation.
“Hopefully, we'll be able to truly make this a global transportation center,” Robb said Thursday.
TransPark Executive Director Darlene Waddell said there was a need to create Robb's position in order to improve transportation at the GTP.
After being downsized several years ago due to a cut in state funding, Waddell said the agency has learned to become more cost-effective, but now was a good time to add the transportation director's job.
“In order to move this project forward, we needed someone with expertise,” she said.
Robb, who will be paid $80,000 a year, is working to develop a marketing program for the Kinston Jetport. He said the first focus will be to attract quality commercial cargo air service, but the marketing plan will also include a way to attract more passenger service to Kinston as well.
Robb's most recent experience includes service as port director of the Grand Turk Cruise Center in Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos, BWI; airport and harbor director in Freeport, Grand Bahama, Bahamas; and working for the Grand Bahamas Shipyard in Grand Bahamas.
He is a retired U.S. Navy captain who served as an aviator, including experience with A-7 and F/A-18 aircraft over 28 years. Robb also has combat experience in Libya, Iraq and Bosnia.
Robb holds an undergraduate degree from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Tex. and a graduate degree from Webster University in St. Louis, Mo.
“We feel certain that Randy is an outstanding choice for this new position, given his extensive background,” Waddell said.
Waddell said Robb will work closely with the state Department of Transportation, other state and governmental agencies and officials, as well as private entities to further the improvement of air, highways and rail access to the TransPark.
